Protecting your Cleandom. Spotlight: Infection Control Practitioner, Jennifer M.

The responsibilities of infection control teams are incredibly complex. Getting a closer look into their real-life, day-to-day practices and decisions can provide valuable insights. In this series of posts, we spoke to real healthcare professionals about what their roles mean to them, and the reasons behind their decision to use ready-to-use wipes in their facility for disinfection.

Read on to hear from Jennifer Maisonville, RPN, Infection Control Practitioner.

A: “I have been with my hospital for over 26 years, where I was a frontline nurse on multiple inpatient units though out the organization. In 2021, I was asked to temporarily assist in the Infection Control Department through the high times of the COVID-19 pandemic. That temporary position turned into a permanent position, and I have now been working in our Infection Prevention and Control department full-time for 3 years.”

A: “We protect our facility from the spread of infections through compliance with hand hygiene policies, regular disinfecting of shared equipment between patients, isolation measures, promoting vaccination among patients and staff and encouraging visitors not to visit if they are feeling sick.”, says Jennifer. “Regular staff education and monitoring also play a crucial role in protecting our facility. Education is also provided to our patients and visitors upon admission, as they are an essential part of infection prevention. My role as an infection control practitioner, I feel, has a profound responsibility to prioritize the health and safety of everyone within the facility. This involves implementing and ensuring infection prevention measures are in place, staying up to date on the latest protocols, and creating a safe environment to minimize the risk of infections for both patients and staff.”

A: “Ready-to-use wipes are very user-friendly, having the capability to be placed safely and conveniently throughout the hospital.”, Jennifer says. “As an ICP, we educate staff on the importance of wiping down shared equipment between patient use, to reduce the spread of infection. As a bedside nurse of over 23 years, time management and patient safety are very important; the portability and disposability of the wipes as well as the dry time contribute to a quicker and more accessible surface disinfection process that fits into the nurse’s dally workflow and effectively protects our patients.”
