Winter in Canada means being prepared, and this year it’s not just to take on outdoor conditions. After a long period of hybrid schedules, the remote work option is drawing to a close for tens of thousands of public and private sector workers – so this means being prepared to weather indoor conditions too!
Returning to the office during winter presents multiple factors conducive to the spread of illness:
- working in close proximity with fellow employees
- exposure on public transit and in public spaces
- exposure to an increased concentration of pathogens circulating in dry indoor air and large ventilation systems.
Add to this the wintertime immune system changes that can make us more susceptible to pathogens, combined with the typical lineup of respiratory viruses like influenza, the common cold, RSV, COVID-19 and pertussis, and GI viruses like norovirus, and you have a perfect storm of increased risk. It’s a simple fact that pathogens thrive in shared spaces, with increased opportunity to spread via shared air and surfaces, compounded by the sheer number of individuals contributing to the incidence and variety of illnesses.
Fortunately, protecting the busy workplace with consistent and thorough cleaning and disinfection strategies has been shown to effectively curtail the spread of pathogens and help keep workplaces healthy.
Protocols and strategies
Prioritize cleaning and disinfecting resources to where they are most needed:
- Shared desks, chairs and meeting areas, shared electronic equipment and devices, kitchen, food/beverage preparation and reception areas.
- Non-restroom disinfection of door handles, light switches, phones, elevators, etc.
- Washroom disinfection of all shared, frequently touched surfaces.
Cleaning and disinfecting during the day and evening:
- During the busy workday, manual cleaning and disinfection can be done without disrupting work with the convenience of ready-to-use wipes.
- In the evening when the workplace is not occupied, it’s easier to more thoroughly clean and disinfect spaces and surfaces where pathogens have accumulated during the day.
Employees have their part to play as well:
- We all need to remember how to responsibly share our workplace with others, with consistent hand hygiene, cleaning up while or after using a shared desk, meeting space or work area, and staying home when ill to help prevent the spread of illness-causing germs.
- Provide hand sanitizer and ready-to-use cleaning and disinfecting wipes throughout the workplace to invite everyone to do their part.
- Consider posting how-to tips and tricks that not only provide information but also act as a good daily prompt to keep on following responsible habits.
Which cleaning and disinfection products are best for the indoor environment?
The right products can effectively break the chain of pathogen transmission. Cleaning and disinfection products need to be effective against the typical pathogens, but also easy to use and safe for the types of surfaces in the workplace, from furniture to electronics.
Following are key factors to include in selecting a cleaner disinfectant:
- Health Canada Drug Identification Number (DIN) on the product label.
- Choose a product that claims efficacy against the typical pathogens – respiratory and GI are the real culprits in the workplace.
- Surface compatibility: Assess the range of surfaces to be cleaned and disinfected and chose a product noted to be safe and non-damaging. Always refer to the manufacturer’s instructions before using any cleaning and disinfecting products.
- Contact time – the busier the workplace, the shorter the desired contact time (e.g., 30 seconds to three minutes).
- Ease of use: A ready-to-use formulation that cleans and disinfects in one step is both effective and quick. Ready-to-use wipes bring each component – sanitizing/disinfecting agent, water, container and wipe – together in a controlled environment. This greatly reduces the risks of contamination or compromise to efficacy and safety. Further, time-related costs of use are lower than a multi-step process like dilution control system.
- What about “green” cleaning and disinfection? Depending on the workplace, the use of effective green cleaning products that use fewer chemicals can be a great option.
The right products and practices will go a long way to supporting employees to make a successful transition back to the office!
